Seeing their junior varsity counterparts defeat Cuba in a shortened two-quarter game, Ryan Flanagan’s Owensville varsity Dutchgirls looked to complete a Highway 19 doubleheader sweep on the road last Wednesday night against the host Lady Wildcats.
Leading 34-27 at halftime, OHS was outscored 42-28 in the second half before falling on the road at Cuba, 69-62.
During the first eight minutes, Owensville jumped out to an 18-11 lead behind nine first-quarter points from senior Liana Miller along with seven markers from fellow senior Breanna Diestelkamp.
Kate Angell also chipped in two points rounding out the first-quarter scoring for the visiting Dutchgirls.
Nearly doubling their point total in the second quarter, OHS went into halftime with the same seven-point lead that they had after one quarter.
Diestelkamp added nine points before the end of the half giving her a team-high 16 points leading Owensville in the first 16 minutes.
Stephani Elliott (3), Ella Wright (2) and Miller (2) also scored for Flanagan’s Dutchgirls in the second quarter.
Held to seven points to open the second half, the Dutchgirls saw Cuba add 16 to their first-half total leaving them trailing 43-41 with one quarter of basketball left to play.
Anna Skornia picked up the scoring slack with five of OHS’ seven third-quarter points.
Miller netted 13 of her game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter for Owensville.
Before the varsity contest, Hannah Wehar’s JV Dutchgirls played a two-quarter game marking their first action in a month.
Paced by 11 points from Leah Reed, OHS posted a 32-10 victory over the host JV Lady Wildcats.
Kyla Hendrix nearly joined Reed in double figures scoring eight first-quarter points.
Keira Hendrix followed with five points along with three from Kayden Wood, two from Cami Gray and one from Olivia Vandegriffe.
Finishing this week at South Callaway, Dutchgirl basketball will open Four Rivers Conference (FRC) play next Tuesday in St. Clair at 5:30 p.m., against the Lady Bulldogs.
