Seeded seventh just like last year, Kevin Lay’s Owensville Dutchmen baseball team once again looked to open their portion MSHSAA Class 4, District 9 Tournament in Sullivan with an upset of the second-seeded Southern Boone Eagles.

Taking an early 1-0 lead after an inning on a Javohntae Gates RBI single scoring Trevor Abernathy, Owensville could not overcome two errors that led to two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Leaving eight runners on base, OHS saw their season end after a 3-1 loss to the higher-seeded Eagles.

Limited to six hits, Abernathy and Drew Baumbach each had a pair while Gates and Grant Steever accounted for the other two.

Steever, Gates, Abernathy and Brady Smith were named to the All-Four Rivers Conference (FRC) baseball team which was released yesterday (Tuesday).

More on their accomplishments will be in an upcoming edition of The Republican throughout the remainder of May.
