Eleanor Broeker

Eleanor Caroline Minnie Broeker, nee Schulte, of Mt. Sterling, entered eternal rest on Monday, Nov. 12, 2018,  at Victorian Place of Owensville.  She had reached the age of 88 years, five months and six days.

Eleanor was born near Bay, Mo., on June 6, 1930, to the late Frank J. and Esther (Krueger) Schulte.  She was baptized Aug. 3, 1930, at the Bethel Presbyterian Church at Bay and was confirmed there April 23, 1944.  Eleanor was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church until its closing in 2005.  She and Calvin then became members of Salem Presbyterian Church near Hope.  She was active in the youth choir, adult choir, quartet and Ladies’ Aide.  She spent many years lovingly cleaning the church and parish hall.  She served as Sunday School teacher for several years, as well.  Eleanor was a charter member, and remained a member of the Bay American Legion Auxiliary for 70 years.  She held every office at least once during her years of membership.  Eleanor also served as project leader and Community Leader of the Bay Community 4-H.  She was a lifetime member of the Gasconade County Bible Society.

Eleanor was raised on a farm near Bay.  Her education began in a one room school house, grades one through eight, which was also attended by her brothers.  She graduated from Owensville High School as Valedictorian of her class in 1948.  After graduation from high school, she remained at home with her parents helping her mother.  She married Calvin A. Broeker, of Pershing, Oct. 24, 1953.  They were married for 59 years.  They rented a home in Mt. Sterling, living there until 1955 when they purchased a home in downtown Mt. Sterling, where they have resided until Calvin passed and Eleanor went to live at Victorian Place of Owensville.  To this union, one daughter, Elaine Evelyn, was born.  

Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Elaine Hesemann and husband Richard, of Owensville; grandson Johnathan Hesemann and wife Natasha of rural Mt. Sterling; granddaughter Melissa Nielsen and husband David of  Mt. Sterling; three step great-grandsons, Boyd, Elliott and Ivan Phillips; and two honorary great-grandsons, Raymond and Zakary Stephan.  Other survivors include brother Harold Schulte and wife Mary Lou of Linn; sister-in-law, Irma Enke and husband Arthur of Owensville; sisters-in-law Nancy Schulte of Florissant and Darlene Broeker of Pershing; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Calvin;  parents, Frank J. and Esther (Krueger) Schulte; brothers, Marvin, Oliver, Alan, Elmer and Maurice Schulte; sisters-in-law, Ruth Schulte, Delores Schulte and Evelyn Broeker; brother-in-law, Richard Broeker; and her parents-in-law, Arthur and Hilda (Schnitger) Broeker.

Eleanor lived a life of service.  Service to her church, the organizations to which she belonged, her friends and neighbors and to her family.  

Visitation will be (today), Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 4-8 p.m. at Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville.

Services will be held at Gottenstroeter Funeral Home on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 10:30 a.m.  with Rev Jason Hilkerbaumer officiating.  Interment will be at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Bay.
