Union girl, 6, loses foot in mowing accident at Bay

BAY — A 6-year-old Union girl had her foot cut off Sunday afternoon in a riding lawn-mower accident at her grandmother’s house near Bay.

Owensville firemen from the Mt. Sterling station and Hermann Area Ambulance District personnel were dispatched to a 911 call to the Jan Wooley residence in the 2400 block of Fowler Road near Route K west of Bay at 4:40 p.m. May 19 for a victim with “possible amputation and severe bleeding.”

Modular PO building to be relocated, set at former Bland site by October

BLAND — A modular post office building currently in Janesville, Ill., will be relocated and installed at the old site in Bland by the end of the October at the latest, according to a real estate specialist for the United States Postal Service.

Marla Larsen-Williams told the 43 Bland residents Monday evening “the main concern is getting the Bland Main Post Office back in operation.”

Lersen-Williams visited sites in town this spring during two prior visits. Larsen-Williams said the decision to return to the damaged site was a relatively  simple one to make once all factors were considered. “We know the landlord,” she said. “The site has utilities and parking.

A Fenton, Mo., motorcyclist attempting to pass a westbound car in a no-passing zone on U.S. 50 was struck and ejected from his 1998 Suzuki Intruder Monday afternoon when the motorists made a left-hand turn into a commercial business driveway.

Thomas family takes ownership of Sassmann’s Chapel sites

Mike and Pam Thomas, owners of Morton’s Chapels in Linn and Chamois, are the new owners of Sassmann’s Chapels in Belle and Bland as of May 1.


“The Sassmann family — Geneva, Bruce and Jan, Sue, Scott, and Julie — would like to introduce you to Mike and Pam Thomas and the new staff at Sassmann’s Chapel,” the Sassmanns said in a prepared release. “Beginning May 1st, 2013, Mike and Pam Thomas have taken responsibility of the Sassmann funeral homes in Belle and Bland. Bruce and Jan will continue to assist Mike and Pam in the transition of the business as they become established in our community.”
