A Saturday evening trip to Owensville to visit his father in a local nursing home ended with Texas resident Ronald Scheel running off of Route A near Gerloff Road.

Gasconade County Sheriff’s Deputy Betty Sickendick said Scheel’s pickup truck went off the right side of Route A and traveled several hundred feet along the ditch line.

He came back up onto the state highway, crossed over it and nose-dived into the ditch on the opposite side. The truck overturned but landed on its wheels. Bay residents Cindy Simmons and her boyfriend, Kirby Pierce, came upon the 7:27 p.m. wreck and assisted Scheel as he struggled to free himself from the crunched in cab. Simmons said they found Scheel thrashing his legs as he attempted to exit the truck. Scheel refused medical treatment but then found himself without a ride to town. Simmons and Pierce gave the 73-year-old Texan a ride into Owensville. His truck was towed from the scene. Sickendick said Scheel had been traveling from Linn to Owensville to visit his father in a nursing home.
