Marissa Jett (right) looks to maneuver the ball around a Salem Lady Tiger defender during JV Dutchgirl action at OHS last week. Coming off consecutive losses to St. Francis Borgia and Cuba on the road, Roger Siwak’s JV Dutchmen were looking for some home cooking to help get them into the win column for the 2011-12 season.
Fighting off a slew of Hermann runs throughout the game, Owensville’s JV Dutchmen entered the win column with a 38-33 victory over the JV Bearcats.
Sparked by a pair of 3-pointers from Landon Farrell, the Dutchmen played their way to a 9-5 lead after one quarter.
An Eric Dahl basket with :26 remaining in the first half gave Owensville their biggest lead of the game at 22-13. A Lucas Landolt basket 10 seconds later helped Hermann trimmed the Dutchmen lead to seven at halftime by a score of 22-15.
Nathan Smith led Owensville and all first-half scorers in the first half with seven points while Landolt led Hermann with six first half markers.
Edging Owensville by a score of 9-7 in the third quarter, Hermann cut the Dutchmen lead to five at 29-24 with seven minutes of basketball remaining in the first game of a homecoming doubleheader.
Landolt scored the first three points of the fourth quarter to pull the Bearcats to within two at 29-27 with 5:16 remaining in regulation.
Farrell answered that with one shot just nine seconds later to bump the Owensville lead back up to five.
Four more points from Landolt pulled Hermann back within two at 33-31 with 55.0 seconds left in the game.
Free throws from Colten Berger and Farrell iced the game down the stretch giving the JV Dutchmen their first win in 11 games.
Leading Owensville with a team-high 14 points was Farrell and he was followed by Smith’s seven first-half points.
Anthony Diestelkamp and Drew Garner added four points while Berger and Dahl each chipped in three markers.
Dowler (2) and Ben Angell (1) rounded out the scoring for the JV Dutchmen.
Wade Orscheln’s JV Dutchgirls entered the 2012 portion of their season carrying a seven-game winning streak starting all the way back with a 30-25 victory over Union in the opening round of the Hermann JV Girls Basketball Tournament.
A pair of victories last week moved the win streak to nine with wins at home over Salem and on the road against Borgia.
Already owning an overtime victory against the Lady Knights at the Hermann JV Tournament, Orscheln’s JV Dutchgirls went for the season sweep on the road last Thursday night in Washington.
It was mission accomplished with a 40-30 victory at Borgia.
Taylor Payne led Owensville with 13 points and five rebounds. Kristen Charboneau added seven points, five assists and two boards.
Grace Schlottach and Courtney Hendrix also kicked in six points apiece as no further information was available on this game by press time.
Playing for the first time in nearly a month last Tuesday against Salem, Owensville showed little rust in a 39-27 win over the Lady Tigers.
Racing out to leads of 9-0 after a quarter and 20-4 at halftime, the JV Dutchgirls were easily able to defend their home court against their opponents from Dent County.
Charboneau paced the victorious Dutchgirls with 11 points and Payne added 10 markers.
Allison Walker, Marissa Jett and Dayla Gruenloh all had four points while Jaelyn Gauer, Schlottach and Hendrix each scored two points to round out the scoring for the JV Dutchgirls.
