Dropping an 84-79 double-overtime decision against St. Clair, Todd Rehmert’s Owensville Dutchmen looked to bounce back Friday night in the consolation championship game of the 31st Owensville Varsity Boys Basketball Tournament against the School of the Osage Indians.

Trailing 7-6 near the midway point of the first quarter, a pair of Daxton Mehrhoff free throws started a 13-2 run that gave the Dutchmen a 19-9 lead after one quarter.

Able to keep their lead in double digits the rest of the game, Rehmert’s Dutchmen kept the consolation plaque and medals in town following their 66-47 victory.

“This was a nice win for us to close out our home tournament,” Rehmert said. “I’m proud of the way the guys responded after a tough overtime loss to St. Clair earlier in the week.”

Following Mehrhoff’s free throws, five different Dutchmen contributed in scoring during OHS’ first-quarter run.

Derek Brandt scored a bucket followed by an old-fashioned 3-point play from Austin Terry.

Zaid Epstein, Brendan Decker and Justin Garner scored consecutive baskets capping the run and giving the Dutchmen a 19-9 lead over Osage after eight minutes.

Boyde Nicks joined the Owensville scoring frenzy connecting on a 3-pointer and a jumper in a :22 span in the early moments of the second quarter.

After Cason Gray’s second basket of the game, Tyler Heidbrink got his name in the scoring column with a free throw near the 3:00 mark of the second quarter.

Terry (4), Decker (2) and Brandt (2) combined to score Owensville’s final eight points of the half giving the host Dutchmen a 37-17 halftime lead doubling their lead from the end of the first quarter.

Coming off the bench, Terry led OHS in the first half with seven points.

In spite of being edged 19-14 in the third quarter, Rehmert’s Dutchmen still had a double-digit lead going into the fourth quarter by a score of 51-36.

Heidbrink led Owensville in the third quarter with four points.

Outscoring Osage 15-11 during the final eight minutes, Owensville snapped a four-game losing streak going back to their 59-54 victory against Cuba over a month ago.

Perhaps inching closer to a spot in the starting lineup, Terry posted his second double double of the tournament leading Owensville against Osage with a team-high 13 points and 11 rebounds in addition to four blocked shots and two steals.

Trevor Abernathy nearly posted a double double of his own finishing with 10 points, eight assists, six steals and five rebounds.

Mehrhoff made it three Dutchmen in double figures equaling Abernathy with 10 points.

Heidbrink added six of his seven points in the second half to go along six points from Decker.

Adding five points apiece for Owensville were Brandt and Nicks.

Following close behind with four points each were Gray and Garner.

Rounding out the scoring for the Dutchmen with a pair of first-quarter free throws for two points was Epstein.

Now 3-6 on the season, Owensville will look to continue it climb back towards the .500 with a road game Friday night against Wright City’s Wildcats starting at 6 p.m., with the junior varsity game.

Claiming consolation hardware from their home tournament, Rehmert’s Dutchmen will have another shot at hardware during Belle’s 4th Annual Boys Basketball Tournament running Jan. 20-25 at Belle High School.

Owensville will open that tournament on Tuesday, Jan. 21 against Newburg at 6:30 p.m.
