Luther to pole vault at Pitt State

A part of six Four Rivers Conference (FRC) championships in track and cross country while at Owensville High School, 2019 OHS graduate Jacob Luther will continue his track and field career at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan.

“Jacob (Luther) has been a strong competitor over the years and I believe that will help him as he competes at the next level,” head OHS Track and Field coach Matt Candrl said.

Growing up in a small town, Luther liked the smallness of the Pitt State campus in East Central Kansas.

“I liked how nice their campus is and the smallness of it,” Luther said. “They have a really nice track facility and program.”

Also in the running for Luther’s track athleticism were the University of Central Missouri (UCM) in Warrensburg and Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) in Joplin.

Luther will face athletes from both of those schools in the Midwest Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) of which PSU is also a member.

Other states with teams in the MIAA that Luther will be competing against include Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri.

Competing in track throughout all four years of high school, Luther had plenty of highlights during his days in Dutchmen orange and black.

During his junior season, he shared the OHS pole vault record of 13 feet, six inches with Eric Dahl and Bryan Candrl.

Luther’s junior season was also when he cleared his highest bar.

During the 2018 MSHSAA Track and Field Championships in Jefferson City, Luther cleared 14-3 to take third place in the Class 3 Boys Pole Vault behind Candrl who cleared 14-9 to win his first and only state title. Candrl currently attends MSSU in Joplin.

Helping his Dutchmen track teammate win three FRC title in four years, Luther also ran cross country during his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons helping them to three more FRC crowns.

Down the road, Luther and Candrl could be competing against each other
