Nearly 10 years ago, Owensville’s Dutchmen and St. James’ Tigers played a football game that ended in a final score more resembling of a basketball score.

This Friday night in Phelps County, both squads will have to combine for 181 points if they want to reclaim the state record for points scored by both teams that they claimed in an 80-75 shootout from back on Oct. 27, 2011.

That game was in district play, since then, the annual showdown between the Dutchmen and Tigers has been moved to week four of the football season.

A handful of former Dutchmen have chimed in with their favorite memories of the game.

Lineman Lynde Mantels recalled the team’s mindset as the game was going on.

“By the time we figured out we were going to score on every possession, we all had the mindset to let St. James score so we can get the ball back and be the last team to score for the win,” Mantels said.

Mantels is now a detective with the Gasconade County Sheriff’s Department.

Wide receiver Terrick Ellis had a couple of memories that stuck out.

“That was one of the best games I was ever a part of,” Ellis said.

Ellis also recalled one play that worked multiple times.

“We were marching down the field and running the same play, couple times to the right, then back left all the way to the end zone,” Ellis said. “I remember telling myself after the first touchdown no way I can be this open and then in happened again on the exact same play.”

Standing for nearly five years as a Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) state record for points scored in a game by both teams, Owensville’s 80-75 victory over St. James has been topped three times since October, 2016.

It was broken the first time in an 8-Man football game on Pattonsburg defeated Kansas City East Christian 84-82 back on Oct. 13, 2016.

Pattonsburg also defeated Albany 94-62 back on Oct. 13, 2017.

As it stands now, the current record is 180 points by both teams from when North Shelby defeated Pattonsburg 92-88 on Oct. 18, 2019.
