On a normal day, the average person looks to record 10,000 steps a day.
Saturday was not an average day for yours truly chasing Owensville Dutchmen and Dutchmen track athletes during the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3, District 5 meet at Waynesville High School.
Racking up 22,098 steps that day, every one of them was worth after witnessing history with both the Dutchmen and Dutchgirls capturing district team titles by nearly 60 points.
In addition to the team titles, several relay teams and individuals left Tiger country with gold medals for their letter jackets.
Two of those district championship times also broke school records.
Dutchmen senior Bryce Payne won a district title in the boys 110-meter hurdles in a new school record time of 14.57 breaking the previous record of 1462 held by Sean Irwin from the 2018 state meet.
OHS’ Dutchgirl 4x100m relay team of Emma Daniels, McKenzy Echols, Cameron Nowack and Saylor Richardson won a district title while also setting a new school record with a time of 50.73.
That time broke the previous record of 51.00 from the 2006 state meet held by Dea Dea Sieckmann, Ashley Cooper, Kelly Soest and Cassondra Copeland.
With 23 athletes competing in a total of 29 events, Owensville will look to have as many top-four finishes as possible to perhaps add even more hardware to the trophy case after Memorial Day weekend.
