39 seniors see spring sports seasons cancelled

Spring sports came to an abrupt halt thanks to COVID-19 (coronavirus) at Owensville High School causing 39 seniors to miss out on their final seasons of track and field, golf, baseball and girl’s soccer.

Looking forward to christening OHS’ new turf field from a baseball standpoint, Dutchmen skipper Tyler Ahring will have to wait for next spring.

Seniors that won’t get a chance to play an official game on the new turf field include Trevor Abernathy, Justin Garner, Javohntae Gates, Justin Gauer, Austin Gregory, Joe Havelka, Cody Linders and Daxton Mehrhoff.

“It stinks that we won’t get to play a game on the new field this spring,” Ahring said. “I was really looking forward to working with the team that we had as I felt we had a good team that could’ve competed for a (Four Rivers) conference and district title.”

On the links, seniors Hunter Hutchison, Blaine Reed and Logan Tiefenbrunn saw their OHS golf careers come to an end in what would’ve been Nathan Cabot’s final season as head golf coach.

Armed with seven seniors, Jordan Palmer’s Dutchgirl soccer team appeared poised to make a run to the program’s first district title.

One of those seniors in Destinee Busenhart entered the season with 98 goals knocking on the door to the milestone of 100 career goals.

Seniors along with Busenhart denied their chance on the pitch due to the coronavirus include Erika Lauer, Jazabel Marquez, Emma Reed, Tara Schnelting, Madison Steever and Marissa West-Derby.

Leading the way in quantity of seniors was Matt Candrl’s Dutchmen and Dutchgirl track teams.

Getting nearly two weeks of practice in, OHS track and field seniors not being able to compete in their final year of high school competition include Jonah Adkison, Michael Adkison, Sean Adkison, Branson Allen, Joe Bauer, Eddie DeLong, Dylan Fudge, Cason Gray, Alex Kellogg, Christian Lowes, Boyde Nicks, Seth Scheidegger, Riley Wehmeyer, Treyden Williams, Paige Heckelmann, Kendra Hults, Melissa Martin, Macy McKinney, Leanne O’Toole, Mackenzie Rademacher and Alesha Shockley.
