STEELVILLE — A perfect run.

That is what Misti Rutledge’s Owensville 7th grade Dutchgirl volleyball team was looking for Saturday during the Steelville 7th Grade Volleyball Tournament in Crawford County.

Sweeping Viburnum, Dixon and Salem to win Pool B, the Dutchgirls advanced to bracket play and a semifinal showdown with Bourbon’s Lady Warhawks.

Sweeping them in two sets (25-15 and 25-11), OMS advanced to the championship match against the host Lady Cardinals.

Able to sweep Steelville by scores of 25-11 and 25-14, Owensville left Steelville with the championship plaque without losing a single set all day.

Opening the tournament against Viburnum’s Lady Blue Jays early in the morning in pool play, Owensville got six aces from Mya Vandegriffe and three aces each from Kerrigan Griffin and Reece Hampton helping them take both sets 25-16 and 25-12.

Next in pool play was a Highway 28 showdown with Dixon’s Lady Bulldogs.

Behind long service runs from Lilly Sample, Myla Lauth and Vandegriffe, the Dutchgirls took both sets from Dixon by scores of 25-12 and 25-6.

Lauth actually served 18 points in a row during the second set with 11 of them counting as aces.

Sample and Vandegriffe each served up three aces in game one against Dixon.

Concluding pool play in the early afternoon, the Dutchgirls took on Salem’s Lady Tigers in a clash of 4-0 teams.

Taking both sets from their Dent County opponents by identical scores of 25-15, Owensville saw more players get in on the serving frenzy.

Ari Robson served four points in a row including two aces early in game one.

Jenna Hoffman closed the match serving the final five points with three of them going for aces.

Prior to their championship run in Steelville, OMS’ seventh-grade Dutchgirls played in back-to-back matches last week against St. James and Hermann.

During the annual daytime doubleheader against the Lady Tigers last Wednesday, Owensville swept the visitors from St. James in two sets by scores of 25-8 and 25-4.

Clarice Krupp served 15 points in a row during game one with 11 of them going for aces.

Hampton had the big run in game two against St. James serving 11 points in a row including five aces.

Eighth-grade action against St. James also saw the Dutchgirls sweep the match in two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-22.

Emma Benton served nine of Owensville’s first 10 points in game one with five of them good for aces.

Brooke Jahnsen also added three aces later in game one.

Trailing 21-16 late in game two, Addi Scheer served five points in a row to tie it up at 21-21 before Payton Myers served the final three points of the match.
