8th grade Dutchgirls bounce back against St. James

Less than 24 hours after being swept in two sets by Hermann (25-23, 25-23), Jamie Ridenhour’s Eighth-grade Owensville Dutchgirl volleyball team had a chance to get back in the win column in front of their home fans.

Hosting St. James’ Lady Tigers Friday afternoon in front of the Owensville Middle School (OMS) student body at Owensville High School, Ridenhour’s squad made the most of the opportunity.

Dropping the first set 25-21, the Dutchgirls stormed back to take the next two sets and the match 21-25, 25-17 and 25-9.

Missing 13 serves in the match the night before agaisnt Hermann, serving plagued OMS in game one Friday against St. James.

Hitting eight serves either in the net or out of bounds, Owensville could not hold early leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before dropping the first set to the visiting Lady Tigers.

Serving the first three points, Allysan Gooch helped the Dutchgirls take an early 3-0 lead in game two.

Clinging to a 16-14 lead midway through game two, McKenna Edwards took her turn behind the service line.

Serving six aces out of the next eight points, Owensville suddenly found themselve a point away from forcing a third-and-deciding set.

Seeing St. James get back withing seven at 24-17, a Gooch kill ended the Lady Tiger rally giving OMS game two 25-17.

Ending game two with a kill, Gooch picked up right where she left off beginning game three by serving the first four points.

Out to an early 6-3 lead, Alexus Nagel served the next four points bumping the Dutchgirl lead to 10-3 in the deciding set.

Two points later, it was Elise McFalls’ turn for serving duty.

Helping score the next 11 points, Owensville suddenly found themselves with a commanding 23-5 lead late in game three.

A Hannah Stoker kill and a St. James error gave the Dutchgirls game three and the match.

OMS’ 8th grade Dutchgirls will host their annual tournament on Saturday, March 14 beginning at 8 a.m., at Owensville High School.
