A two-vehicle accident closed down U. S. Highway 50 for a short while last Thursday, July 18. Officer Brandon McCulloch, with the Gerald Police says the accident occurred around 4 p.m.

Michael Kleekamp, 59, driving a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, was traveling eastbound, had stopped to make a left turn onto State Route Y.

Edward DeClue, 18, of Gerald was also eastbound and struck the rear of Kleekamp’s stopped vehicle.

There were no injuries as a result of the accident.

A rescue unit and a pumper from the Gerald-Rosebud Fire Protection District also responded to the accident. While on scene, department members helped provide traffic control around the accident site. The highway was closed for around 30 minutes, McCulloch estimates.

McCulloch says he expects both vehicles to be declared a total loss.

The Santa Fe was towed from the scene by a towing service. The Stratus was privately towed.
