Adams, Martin claim weekend wrestling tournament titles

ST CLAIR — Whether it was in St. Clair or St. Louis, Dustin Howard’s Owensville Dutchmen and Dutchgirl wrestlers were getting after it in tournament action.

First up for the orange and black was a Friday afternoon date in Franklin County at the St. Clair Girls Classic wrestling tournament held at St. Clair High School.

Entering the tournament with five wrestlers, the Dutchgirls wound up finishing in the middle of the pack posting an eighth-place team point total of 79 points amongst 15 scoring teams.

Dutchgirl freshman Elizabeth Adams showed the way for Owensville winning all five of her matches en route to a St. Clair tournament title at 115 pounds.

In addition to winning a 5-2 decision over Wright City’s Hailey Henson, Adams scored wins by fall over St. Clair’s Lili Vernon (2:45), West Plains’ Arianna Richardson (3:27), Parkway West’s Sebrina Urdaneta (2:21) and Kirksville’s Lauryn Nelson (3:08).

McKenzy Echols ran into a competitive group of wrestlers at 141 pounds settling for ninth place after being pinned in her four matches during the tournament.

Josie Gerlemann left St. Clair with three wins helping her place fifth at 149 pounds.

Losing her first two matches by fall, Gerlemann bounced back in round four with a win by medical forfeit over Wright City’s Jayden Precht before pinning fellow Wright City grappler Lauren Ritter in :22.

Pinning Sullivan’s Maria Schatzl in 1:30, Gerlemann left St. Clair with a fifth-place finish.

Bailee Dare won four of her five matches at 159 pounds including a win by fall over West Plains’ Zoey Foster in 3:50 to secure a third-place medal from St. Clair.

Kelby Schoenfeld also competed for the Dutchgirls at 174 pounds settling for fifth place after being pinned in all four of her matches.

Saturday at Fort Zumwalt South, Howard’s Dutchmen grapplers also placed in the middle of the pack as a team taking seventh place with 113 points out of 13 scoring teams.

Michael Martin made it two orange and black grapplers winning tournament titles over the weekend claiming the top spot at 113 pounds with a win by fall over Troy Buchannan’s Carter Barnes in 1:47.

Freshman Conner Roach made it all the way to the championship match at 120 pounds before losing a 7-2 decision to Fort Zumwalt West’s Brayden Eikermann leaving him settling for a second-place medal.

Earning a spot in the semifinals at 182 pounds with two wins by fall, freshman Landon Kramme dropped an 8-2 decision to Lebanon’s Cade Muscia dropping him to the third-place match.

Bouncing back with a win by fall over Eureka’s Blake Ashby, Kramme became the third Dutchmen to leave Fort Zumwalt South with a medal.

Eli Wilson won his last two matches by fall including a pin of Fort Zumwalt East’s David Glenn in :49 to place fifth at 195 pounds.

Gabe Soest also claimed fifth place at 152 pounds with a win by fall over Eureka’s Payton Hoover in 3:49.

OHS wrestling will compete Saturday in tournament action at Buffalo High School.
