SULLIVAN — Friday highlights.

They were plentiful for Hannah (Wehar) Koppelmann’s Owensville Dutchgirl softball team in the Peoples Bank Back to School Softball Classic hosted by Sullivan High School at the Campbell-Chapman Sports Complex.

Winning two of three games in Pool D Friday, Owensville had a walk-off win, a come-from-behind win and a freshman hit her first varsity home run.

Starting tournament softball in Sullivan Friday morning, the Dutchgirls took on Poplar Bluff’s Lady Mules.

Committing three errors in the bottom of the first inning, OHS saw Poplar Bluff turn that into five runs.

Unable to overcome that early deficit, the Dutchgirls fell in game one to the Lady Mules 7-1 in five innings due to the tournament time limit rule.

Owensville’s highlight against the Lady Mules was freshman third baseman Emma Daniels hitting her first career varsity home run in the top of the third inning.

“Emma helps us a lot,” Koppelmann said. “She’s athletic and has great hand and eye coordination. She’s also got a good bat for her size.

Before Daniels hit her home run, Owensville had scoring chances in the first and second innings against Poplar Bluff.

An Anna Finley two-out triple went for naught as she was left stranded at third base after the top of the first inning.

Trailing the Lady Mules 5-0 after one inning, the Dutchgirls had a chance to cut into the deficit.

Paige Bossaller, Paige Loyd and Gabby Bunners all singled. However, the Dutchgirls were not able to push a run across.

A Kaitlyn Nelson single in the top of the fourth inning was Owensville’s last hit before they fell to the Lady Mules.

Next up for the Dutchgirls from Sullivan were De Soto’s Lady Dragons.

Trailing 3-0 after the top of the first inning, Owensville looked to answer De Soto in the bottom half of the inning.

Tying the score at 3-3 with three runs of their own, the Dutchgirls then put up single tally marks in the second and third innings to defeat the Lady Dragons 5-3 in four innings.

Similar to the Poplar Bluff game, inning number one was not pretty for Owensville on defense.

Two errors, a walk and a hit batter led to three runs for the Lady Dragons in the top of the first inning.

Koppelmann’s Dutchgirls looked for an answer in the bottom half of the first inning.

Daniels led off the inning with a single before stealing second base and taking third on a wild pitch.

Halie Boyer walked while Daniels scored on a wild pitch getting OHS on the board.

Finley then walked moving Boyer to second base.

Addison Wright helped her cause moving the runners to second and third  base in spite of grounding out to second base.

Another wild pitch allowed Boyer to score and Finley to advance to third base cutting the De Soto lead to 3-2.

On the next pitch, Paige Bossaller ripped a RBI ground-rule double to center field scoring Finley and tying the game at 3-3 after one inning.

Still tied at 3-3 moving to the bottom of the second, Owensville looked for their first lead of the tournament.

Daniels led off the inning being hit by a pitch before taking second base on a passed ball.

Taking one for the team, Boyer laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Daniels over to third base.

During Finley’s second at-bat of the game, Daniels scored on a wild pitch putting the Dutchgirls ahead 4-3 over the Lady Dragons.

Behind Wright’s pitching in less-than-ideal weather conditions, she gave the Dutchgirl offense a chance to add to their 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Nelson led the inning off with a walk before she stole second base during Loyd’s next at bat.

Loyd the singled through the left side of the infield advancing Nelson to third base and putting runners at the corners with no outs.

During Leah Reed’s second at bat of the game, Loyd scored on a passed ball giving Owensville a 5-3 lead while Nelson also took second on the same passed ball.

Wright finished the game retiring 12 De Soto batters in a row including the final three in the top of the fourth inning.

Owensville’s final tournament pool game on Friday from Sullivan matched them up against the School of the Osage Lady Indians.

Allowing a combined eight runs in the first inning of their previous two games, Owensville gave up four more against Osage in the top half of the first on three errors.

Boyer started the bottom of the first with a one-out single only to be followed with another single from Finley putting two runners on base.

During Wright’s first at bat, a passed ball moved Boyer and Finley up a base. A throwing error by the Osage catcher allowed Boyer to score and Finley to move up to third base.

Wright then helped her cause lifting a RBI sacrifice fly to left field allowing Finley to score and cut Osage’s lead to 4-2 after one inning.

After a scoreless second inning, Owensville once again looked to further cut into the Lady Indian lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Finding the right-center field gap, Daniels led off the bottom of the third with a stand-up triple.

Boyer then lifted a RBI sacrifice fly to left field scoring Daniels cutting Osage’s lead to 4-3.

Finley then reached on an error before scoring on a Bossaller RBI single tying the game at 4-4 after three innings.

A scoreless fourth inning then led to some fifth-inning theatrics.

Moments after gunning down the potential go-ahead run, Finley laced a ground-rule double to left field before a Bossaller walk-off fielder’s choice RBI scored Finley to give OHS a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Osage.
