Coming off a 4-2 loss on the road at Union in which the Wildcats scored three of their runs on sacrifice flies, Tyler Ahring’s Owensville Dutchmen baseball team ventured back into Franklin County to take on Sullivan’s Eagles.
Looking for their first win since 2003, OHS grabbed an early 1-0 lead before holding on for a 3-2 victory at Bank of Sullivan Ball Park on the campus of Sullivan High School.
“This was a big win especially after a tough loss at Union,” Ahring said. “We still have a shot at winning our first (Four Rivers) conference title since 2001.”
With their ace on the mound, Dutchmen senior Brady Smith pitched around a walk, a fielder’s choice and a single to keep the host Eagles off the scoreboard after one inning.
Senior center fielder Drew Baumbach led off the top of the second with a walk before a Sebastian Dixon double to center field moved him to third base.
A Cody Linders RBI sacrifice fly scoring Baumbach put Owensville on top 1-0 over the host Eagles.
Smith pitched around Garrett Juergens lead-off single striking out the next three Eagles in the bottom of the second inning.
It remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth inning.
That was when Mr. Smith was able to help his own cause as part of a two-out rally.
Back-to-back singles from Bryor Bogle and Trevor Abernathy set up a two on, two out situation for the Dutchmen hurler.
Hitting a 1-1 pitch into center field, Smith drove in Bogle and Abernathy with a two-RBI single putting OHS on top 3-0.
Holding Sullivan scoreless for five innings, Smith finally saw his shutout hopes dashed when Austin Frye reached on a fielder’s choice before scoring on a pair of Dutchmen errors cutting their lead to 2-1.
Throwing 110 pitches in six innings, Smith gave way to Javohntae Gates who pitched the bottom of the seventh inning with a 3-1 lead.
“(Brady) Smith pitched very well keeping us off balance,” Sullivan head baseball coach Jason Harbour said. “We just weren’t able to get into an offensive rhythm today and give credit to Smith who pitched a great game.”
In spite of Juergens scoring an a Blayten Nolie sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, Owensville held on for a big FRC road win.
Weather permitting, OHS will face Cuba and Linn later this week.
