Ending the Four Rivers Baseball Classic with a 1-3 record, Tyler Ahring’s Owensville Dutchmen baseball team went into their Monday night showdown with Salem’s Tigers looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

Doing all of their scoring over the first three innings, OHS limited a sixth-inning rally by Salem to one run before holding on for a 5-2 victory improving their record to 2-3 overall on the young season to go along with a 2-0 mark at Memorial Field.

Garnering starting pitching duties, Trevor Abernathy pitched around a two-out walk in the top of the first inning to keep the visiting Tigers off the scoreboard.

Bryor Bogle led the bottom half of the first inning off with a single up the middle before advancing to second on a wild pitch.

Abernathy helped his cause drawing a walk on four straight pitches.

With one out, TC Fisher singled through the right side of the infield allowing Bogle to score giving the host Dutchmen an early 1-0 lead.

Advancing to second on the play, Abernathy then took third on a ground out before scoring when Brady Smith reached on an error doubling the Owensville lead to 2-0 after one inning of baseball.

Setting down Salem in order in the top of the second inning, Abernathy gave his offense a chance to add to their lead in the bottom of the second.

Starting a two-out rally with a walk, Bogle stole second before Abernathy drove him in with an RBI single pushing OHS’ lead to 3-0 through two innings.

Retiring the side in order again in the top of the third inning, Abernathy and the Dutchmen offense went back to work in the latter half of the third inning.

Smith and Javohntae Gates recorded back-to-back singles setting up Sebastian Dixon with a chance to redeem himself for grounding into a double play the previous inning.

In the hole facing a one ball and two strike count, Dixon looped one into center field for a two-RBI single scoring Smith and Gates upping the Dutchmen advantage to 5-0 through three innings.

Limiting Salem to two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out eight, Abernathy earned the complete-game victory throwing 104 pitches.

Bogle and Smith led the OHS offense with two hits each.

Falling 7-3 to Rolla in the final pool game of the FRBC last Tuesday, Owensville found themselves in the bronze bracket Saturday in St. James.

Facing the host Tigers Saturday morning, the Dutchmen jumped out to a 4-0 lead highlighted by a Drew Baumbach three-run home run in the top of the first inning.

Up 5-0 in the top of the fourth, OHS saw St. James scored eight of the next 10 runs to hand them an 8-7 loss in round-robin action.

Down 5-3 against Hermann that afternoon, a seventh-inning rally fell short seeing the Dutchmen drop a 5-4 heartbreaker to the Bearcats.

Facing Belle last night (Tuesday) at home, OHS will play Newburg tomorrow (Thursday) on the road starting at 4:30 p.m.
