Police Chief Jim Helton first approached the Board of Aldermen about purchasing new guns for his department in September.
In a special meeting, held Wednesday, Sept. 25, Helton presented some informal bid quotes to the board. The board, by unanimous decision, voted to purchase five Glock 17 (gen5) 9mm handguns with three magazines and night sights from Glen Oder for $2,650. The new guns were issued to officers Monday.
Helton says the newer models will provide a cost savings by using cheaper 9 mm rounds.
Once the old guns have been cleaned, Helton plans to sell them. The five Glock 22 40 caliber handguns will be sold to the highest qualified bidder.
