Kris Altemeyer, Owensville High School (OHS) assistant principal, was awarded the OHS principal position Jan. 16 with a 5-0 vote by the Gasconade County R-2 Board of Education.
When asked about his goals for the school, Altemeyer said he wants to continue the legacy.
“We have a great student body and a great faculty,” Altemeyer said. “I want to continue to help with the successes we have. Mrs. (Cindy) Hawkins has been a great influence for me and I can’t thank her enough for helping me. I am excited.”
Altemeyer is a “hometown boy” and says the Owensville school district is exactly where he wants to be.
“This is my home, my hometown,” Altemeyer said. “I love this district and I love working here. My goal is to do what I can, help the building grow, and help the district grow.”
“We are excited that Kris was selected,” said Superintendent Dr. Chuck Garner. “He has a lot of energy and is going to do great things. It is bittter-sweet to say good-bye to Ms. Hawkins.”
Altemeyer has been with the district since August 2003 and was promoted from coach and math teacher at OHS during the 2018 school year to assistant principal under Hawkins. Hawkins was hired in August 2015 following a string of short-term administrators. Altemeyer does not plan to follow the same pattern as the last few.
“I can speak for myself honestly, I have every intention of working in this district until I retire and want to make sure I do everything I can,” he said. “I went to school here. I want to make sure I focus on this building specifically.”
Altemeyer started his teaching career at Hermann High School from 2002-03 before he came to Owensville in 2003.
He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary education from Westminster College in 2002; a master of educational administration certificate for grades 7-12 in 2009; and holds certificates in Missouri Initial Administration and Missouri Career Continuous Teaching.
“Dr. Garner and Dr. (Jeri Kay) Hardy also have been great,” Altemeyer added. “They have supported me a lot the whole time I have worked with them and I look forward to continue working with them.”
Altemeyer will ascend to principal’s job at OHS in July for the 2019-20 school year.
