Looks can be deceiving. Many of us are viewing our world from our windows. We are surrounded by gorgeous, green yards and blooming flowers. But our communities are still reeling from the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Franklin County Humane Society (FCHS) shelter has been forced to postpone or cancel three fund-raisers as well as over 10 of our on-site adoption opportunities at places like PetSmart, Petsense and local community events. We have been operating on an appointment-only schedule since March 23. We are unsure what will happen to future fund-raisers or when we will be able to open our doors for public visits and volunteer help.
Our facility provides a temporary home for an average of 100 pets per day, but we currently have 147 homeless animals in our care. Our amazing staff is handling this increase in pets without the help of many of our volunteers, due to social distancing regulations. Our staff is handling extra duties, experiencing reduced hours, caring for their own health, all while earning an income dictated by the budget of a small non-profit.
Since Jan. 1 of this year, FCHS has found forever homes for 151 cats and 138 dogs. In addition, 72 lost dogs and cats have been reunited with their owners through the efforts of our dedicated staff. Our accomplishments are your accomplishments, because none of this would be possible without the generosity and support of animal lovers like you.
