Ardene Amanda Schoening, 88, Hermann rural route, went to be with Jesus in the early hours Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022, at the New Haven Care Center.

She was born April 11, 1933, the daughter of the late Herman and Welma (Zastrow) Topel in Washington.

She was united in marriage to Calvin F. Schoening, May 20, 1951, at St. James United Church of Christ, Stony Hill. Calvin preceded her in death on Aug. 4, 1995.

Ardene was a lifelong member of St. James Evangelical Church, Stony Hill. She was active in the St. James Women’s Guild, taught Sunday School and VBS, and her and Calvin were faithful servants for the St. James church picnics, and many church events.

She was first and foremost a farmer’s wife as the homemaker. She always had a garden, chickens, and a cow to milk. After raising her daughters, she also worked at Langenburg Hat Factory in New Haven and for Swiss Meat Company in Swiss.

In retirement, she enjoyed her free time going to Senior Centers in New Haven, Gerald, or Owensville to play pinochle and bingo. She delivered Meals on Wheels for many years in the Gerald area. She enjoyed reading, going to musical shows, working at and attending county fairs, attending church and church activities, but most importantly, her time with family and activities on the farm. Her family was everything to her and she was loyal, encouraging, and supportive to the end.

She is preceded in death by parents Herman and Welma; husband Calvin; sister Arlene Hahne; and brother Maynard Topel.

Ardene leaves a lasting legacy always to be remembered. She is survived by daughters Sherry Traub and husband Alan of Hermann, and Mary Ann Boland of Washington; granddaughters Callie Traub of Holts Summit, Amber Boland of St. Louis, and Brianne Boland of Austin, Texas; and sister Lavern Coon and husband Jim of Owensville; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 7, at St. James Evangelical Church, Stony Hill, with Rev. Tom Lloyd officiating. Burial was at St. James Cemetery, Stony Hill.

Memorials suggested to St. James Evangelical Church or the Stony Hill Fire Department.
