Soest, Schoenfeld, Shoemaker ends seasons at state

COLUMBIA — Get on the podium.

That was the goal for the Owensville High School wrestling quartet of Bailee Dare, Kelby Schoenfeld, Gabe Soest and Hayden Shoemaker last week during the 2023 Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Wrestling Championship held at Columbia’s Mizzou Arena on the University of Missouri campus.

In the end, Dare was the lone orange and black grappler standing.

She made Dutchgirl wrestling history by placing sixth in MSHSAA Class 1 Girls Wrestling at 170 pounds becoming the first All-State Dutchgirl wrestler.

“It feels so amazing to see my hard work pay off seeing myself on the medal stand,” Dare said.

Dare’s road to the medal stand began Wednesday morning in first-round action against Marshfield junior Isabella Whitlock.

A familiar face awaited Dare in the quarterfinals.

Kirksville’s Madisynn Crawford faced Dare in a rematch from the Wonder Woman Tournament in Columbia back in December.

Trailing 12-3 midway through the second period, it appeared Dare was on her way to the wrestle back side of the bracket.

However, a reversal with :21 left in the second led to Dare winning the match by fall in 3:52 punching her ticket to the semifinals and securing her spot on the medal stand.

“I’m so proud of how Bailee never gave up after being down 12-1 in the second period,” Dutchgirl head wrestling coach Zach Bollmann said.

Next in the semifinals for Dare was Harrisonville senior Iasiah Turrentine.

Pinned in :30 by the Lady Wildcat senior, Dare was sent to the fourth round of wrestle backs while Turrentine went on to win a state championship at 170 pounds.

Losing by fall to Pleasant Hill’s Alana Thelin in 3:47 during the fourth round of wrestle backs, Dare once again found herself matched up with Crawford for fifth place at 170 pounds.

Dare found out the hard way that it is difficult to beat someone three times as the Kirksville junior pinned Dare in 2:03 forcing the Dutchgirl sophomore to settle for sixth place at 170 pounds.

Schoenfeld saw her Dutchgirl wrestling career end after two losses by fall in Columbia during first-round action to Holden’s Aubree Castaneda (1:17) and Marceline’s Molly Sportsman in 4:06.

Soest saw his Dutchmen wrestling career end after a loss by fall in 1:10 to Lucas Estes (St. Michael the Archangel) before earning a win by medical forfeit in the first round of wrestle backs.

Shoemaker’s sophomore season ended when he lost an 11-6 decision to Cassville sophomore DJ Glidewell.
