Board approves street projects for 2019

When the Board of Aldermen met last Thursday, March 14, they accepted a plan for street projects for 2019 presented to them.

Public Works Director Nick Grube had listed four projects that he felt were most pressing. There were no costs attached to the projects.

The board agreed to accept Grube’s recommendations, which were:

Cedar Street (South of W. Fitzgerald Ave.)

The project will start at W. Fitzgerald Ave. and proceed South 315 feet with street demo and a new eight-inch rock base, then continue an additional 1,185 feet to the end of the street with a two-inch overlay of asphalt. Additional cost will include a new 20’x40’ concrete swale at the intersection of Sixth and Cedar streets.

Fifth Street (Cedar Street to Walnut Street)

The project will start at Cedar Street and proceed West 354 feet to Walnut Street. This block of Fifth Street needs to have seven feet of the north and south sides, totaling 14 feet, removed and a new eight-inch rock base installed, with ditch reconstruction.

West Springfield

The entire street needs to be sealed to prevent further damage due to weather and heavy truck traffic. There are two options: Either add one layer of chip and seal, or add a double layer of chip and seal. Grube recommends the second option.

Bittersweet Drive (S. Bernhardt Ave. to Gerald City Park)

This street also needs to be sealed due to weather and heavy traffic, one layer of chip and seal would give the street five to eight years of protection.
