Boy Scout Troop 448, the Venturing Crew, and adult leaders teamed up Saturday to collect food for the Community Outreach food pantry in their annual Scouting for Food drive. Scoutmaster John Colombo credits the generosity of the community for helping the scouts surpass their previous record—set last year — of 1,372 items collected. Saturday, the scouts hauled in 1,627 non-perishable food items. Many of the items received will be used to provide Christmas baskets to help feed hungry families during the holidays. The remaining items will be used throughout the year to help feed the community’s needy, many of whom are elderly. This year 10 Thanksgiving baskets were handed out, which is down from 24 baskets in 2017. Kelly Landolt, with Community Outreach says he hopes the decrease means area residents are doing better financially this year. In any case, with the help of groups such as the Boy Scouts, the food pantry will continue to assist the area’s hungry.
