Making the transition from the hardwood to the golf course, Cullen VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchmen opened their season Monday afternoon on the links at Cuba Lakes Golf Course against the host Wildcats, Belle’s Tigers and Newburg’s Wolves.
Finishing four strokes behind Cuba (214) in the team standings, OHS (218) edged Newburg (220) for second place with Belle carding a team score of 251 to place fourth.
Senior Brendan Decker led the Dutchmen with a team-low round of 51 good for fifth place overall.
Freshman Crew Epstein made his varsity golf debut carding a nine-hole round of 52 good for sixth place individually right behind Decker.
Fellow freshman Noah Caldwell carded a round of 56 placing him 10th individually while senior Tyler Perkins placed 11th with a round of 59.
Kohl Grannemann rounded out the Dutchmen quintet tying for 12th place with a round of 62.
Cuba’s Cooper Mehl was the meet medalist firing a nine-hole round of 45.
Among junior varsity golfers, Owensville’s Eli Graham fired a meet-low round of 55 followed closely by his brother Brandon Graham with a round of 58.
Zander Smith also shot a round of 65 for the JV Dutchmen.
Weather and course conditions permitting, the Dutchmen will host St. Clair’s Bulldogs and Union’s Wildcats in a Four Rivers Conference (FRC) tri-meet today (Wednesday) beginning at 4 p.m., at Owensville Golf Course.
