SULLIVAN — Suffering a 52-0 loss to Sullivan’s Eagles two weeks ago, Nathan Cabot’s Owensville Dutchmen football team went into their MSHSAA Class 3, District 2 opening-round showdown looking to return the favor.
Within striking distance at halftime trailing 7-0, Owensville looked to sustain the momentum of a Derek Brandt interception on the final play of the first half to stay within one score of the Eagles.
Receiving the opening kickoff to start the second half, the Eagles took advantage of OHS’ special teams.
Sullivan’s Ethan Krygiel found a hole and took off 87 yards for a touchdown doubling their lead to 14-0 before eventually ending Owensville’s season handing the Dutchmen a 27-0 loss.
“Owensville was a much-improved team from the last time we played them two weeks ago,” Sullivan Eagle head football coach Cody Davis said. “They have a lot of good athletes over there and coach (Nathan) Cabot did a heck of a job preparing them to face us again.”
Owensville’s best scoring drive came in the second quarter when a Brendan Decker to Trevor Abernathy touchdown pass was wiped off the board due to a holding penalty.
“We had several things that didn’t go our way tonight,” Cabot said. “I’m proud of the way our guys kept fighting and playing hard throughout the entire game. I’m looking forward to a productive offseason before we get back at it.”
Throwing for 224 yards on 24-41 passing, Decker’s favorite target Friday night in Eagle country was senior Cason Gray with four receptions for 90 yards.
Adding to his interception, Brandt also caught a team-high six passes for 80 yards.
In spite of a suffocating run defense from the Eagles, sophomore running back Austin Lowder led the Dutchmen on the ground with 26 yards rushing on seven carries.
On the defensive side of the football for Owensville, senior Seth Scheidegger closed out his Dutchmen football playing career with a team-high 12 total tackles.
Garret West followed closely behind with eight total tackles to go along with seven from TC Fisher.
Sullivan advances to the C3D2 semifinals Saturday against Roosevelt on the road in St. Louis with a 1 p.m., kickoff.
St. Clair will host Borgia in the other district semifinal Friday night.
