Caldwell, Daniels, Wright named to PBHC All-Tournament Team

SULLIVAN — Dispatching Salem and St. Pius X (Festus) earlier in the week, John VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchgirl basketball team earned another shot at Peoples Bank Holiday Classic (PBHC) championship hardware against St. James’ Lady Tigers.

Owensville was looking for their first-ever PBHC title while at the same time looking to deny the Lady Tigers their fourth consecutive PBHC title.

Deadlocked at 14-14 entering halftime, Owensville saw St. James go on a 13-3 run putting them in a 27-17 hole late in the third quarter.

Only able to get as close as nine at 34-25 with :40 left, VanLeer’s Dutchgirls settled for second-place hardware following a 37-25 loss to St. James.

Camryn Caldwell led the orange and black with 13 points, two rebounds and two steals.

Ali Daniels nearly made it two double-digit Dutchgirls finishing with eight points, five rebounds and two steals.

Cameron Nowack and Brynn Wright each added two points for Owensville to round out the scoring in the PBHC title game against St. James.

Caldwell, Daniels and Wright were all named to the PBHC All-Tournament Team.

Semifinal action last Wednesday saw the Dutchgirls matched up against the St. Pius X (Festus) Lady Lancers at Sullivan High School.

Taking a double-digit lead into halftime by a score of 33-20, Owensville was nearly doubled up in the third quarter by the Lady Lancers who cut their lead to 40-33 going into the fourth quarter.

After a SPX 3-pointer made it 40-36 with 6:13 remaining, the orange and black ended the game on a 10-0 run sparked by a Daniels bucket helping the Dutchgirls to a 50-36 semifinal win over the Lady Lancers.

Daniels showed the way for the Dutchgirls with a double double of 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Caldwell also reached double figures with 14 points, two rebounds and two assists.

Nowack nearly made it a trifecta of double-digit Dutchgirls finishing with nine points and seven rebounds.

Addison Menz netted six of her eight points in the second half while also grabbing six rebounds.

Cylee Reed rounded out the Owensville scoring against SPX with a pair of fourth-quarter free throws for two points.

Brooke Blankenship led the Lady Lancers with 11 points and seven rebounds.

First-round action last Monday in Sullivan against Salem saw the Dutchgirls set a new PBHC record for fewest points allowed in a game by one team following their 58-10 victory over the Lady Tigers.

Daniels led three Dutchgirls in double figures with 16 points, seven steals, six rebounds and six assists.

Caldwell added 14 points while Brynn Wright kicked in 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Chipping in three points apiece for the Dutchgirls against Salem were Lily Barker, Abbey Quilacio and Reed.

Hitting for two points each were Kabren Kelley, Lainey Moss, Menz and Nowack.

Piper Koelling rounded out the Owensville scoring against Salem with one point on a fourth-quarter free throw.
