Chamber prepares for Parade of Lights Saturday, Dec. 5

Posted

The Gerald Area Chamber of Commerce is busy planning their annual Parade of Lights, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 5. This year the parade begins at 6 p.m.

Organizers are currently recruiting floats and other entries for the parade.

A bicycle category will be added to this year’s cash prize awards. Kids are encouraged to deck their bikes out in lights and join the parade. There will be other surprise additions to the parade. Santa and Mrs. Claus will lead the parade on Old Whitey, the vintage fire truck of the Gerald-Rosebud department.

In true 2020 style, the main concern of the event is to keep everyone safe from the coronavirus. The visits with Santa will be altered in an effort to keep Santa safe.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be inside the Depot in Legion park at a window. Kids will be encouraged to wave at Santa through the glass, pose on a bench under the window for photos and deposit their letter to Santa in a special mailbox. They will then receive a free cookie, hot chocolate and treat bag. Christmas books from the Gerald Library will be available to the kids at no charge.

There will be a food court at the park with a variety of vendors selling a variety of food and hot drinks. A bonfire will help keep everyone warm.

Pony rides and other entertainment are also planned.
