Chamois man charged for knifing brother

Gary W. Wood, 52, of Chamois, has been charged with first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action following an Aug. 20 altercation at his home where he allegedly stabbed his brother multiple times in a fight.

Deputy Angie Pinnell was dispatched to 307 N. Cherry Street in Chamois, where Samuel D. Wood was sitting on the porch with apparent wounds and bleeding profusely.

In his probable cause statement, Detective Nicholas Pappas noted that Samuel Wood had fled the location of the fight, 201 E. Missouri Ave., where he lived with his brother. As members of the Chamois Fire Department treated Samuel Wood, Deputy Pinnell traveled to the brothers’ home to locate Gary.

During an interview with Pinnell, Gary explained that he “gets angry because of things that have happened” in his life, according to the PC statement. Pinnell noted that Wood would go to his room to yell and vent his frustration.

When this occurred on Aug. 20, Gary said his brother opened the door and told him to stop. According to Gary, he told his brother to get out and pushed him away. Samuel then pushed his way into the room and started talking down to his brother, which led to the physical altercation.

A nightstand was knocked over, and a knife fell out. Gary told Pinnell he grabbed it and stabbed his brother several times. When asked why he did it, Gary replied, “to take his strength away,” Pappas wrote in the PC statement.

Gary said he saw the blood and stopped, after which he said Samuel crawled out of the bedroom. He told deputies he had thrown the knife under the bed to “get it away from” him.

Samuel was transported to University Hospital. He was interviewed by Boone County Detective Ken Bryce and provided a similar account. Pappas wrote that Samuel said he was able to grab his brother’s arm and get off the floor, after which he said he walked out of the room.

According to Det. Pappas, Gary admitted he has mental health issues and that previous counseling did not help. Gary has a Franklin County warrant for misdemeanor child neglect as well.

Gary Wood is free on a $10,000 bond and is due to appear before Judge Sonya Brandt at 10 a.m. on Sept. 27.
