Christmas in March

Friday morning felt like Christmas in March for coaches throughout the state of Missouri in baseball, girls soccer, boys golf and track and field.

That was because the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) released their district assignments and classifications for the upcoming spring seasons.

Cullen VanLeer’s Owensville High School golf team will have the first crack at competing in their district tournament on Monday, May 8.

Assigned to Class 3, District 2, VanLeer’s Dutchmen will compete alongside Blair Oaks’ Falcons, Centralia’s Panthers, Father Tolton Regional Catholic’s Trail Blazers, Fatima’s Comets, Fulton’s Hornets, Hallsville’s Indians, Macon’s Tigers, Mexico’s Bulldogs, Moberly’s Spartans, Orchard Farm’s Eagles, Southern Boone’s Eagles, St. Charles West’s Warriors, Whitfield’s Warriors, Winfield’s Warriors and Wright City’s Wildcats.

From the district tournament, state qualifiers will converge on Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield for the MSHSAA Class 3 Boys Golf Championships held on Monday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 16.

Shortly before boys golf holds their state tournament, district tournaments will take place in baseball, girls soccer and track and field.

Looking to defend their district title from a year ago, Steven Kemp’s Owensville Dutchmen were assigned to Class 4, District 4.

Their opponents remained the same in Cuba’s Wildcats, Salem’s Tigers, St. Clair’s Bulldogs, St. James’ Tigers and Sullivan’s Eagles.

State baseball will take place in early June at US Baseball Park in Ozark.

Kalyn Kemp’s Owensville Dutchgirl soccer team will see a few new teams enter the district landscape as they were assigned to Class 2, District 4.

Teams remaining the same along with the Dutchgirls include Principia’s Lady Panthers, St. Clair’s Lady Bulldogs, St. James’ Lady Tigers, Sullivan’s Lady Eagles, and Westminster Christian Academy’s Lady Wildcats.

Winning a district and state championship last spring, the Mary Institute Country Day School (MICDS) Lady Rams were bumped up to Class 3, District 3 due to accumulating championship factor points.

Clayton’s Lady Greyhounds were switched to Class 2, District 2.

Whitfield’s Lady Warriors made the move up from Class 1, District 4 a year ago into the same district field as the Dutchgirls.

Rounding out the Class 2, District 4 field will be Blair Oaks’ Lady Falcons who are in their first year of girls soccer.

Girls state soccer will take place in early June at the Worldwide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton.

Matt Candrl’s Dutchmen and Dutchgirl track and field teams will see the same schools from a year ago in their quest to add a couple of district title plaques to a crowded hallway at Owensville High School.

Teams standing between a second consecutive district title for the Dutchmen and an improvement for the runner-up Dutchgirls include Ava’s Bears, Blair Oaks’ Falcons, Buffalo’s Bison, Cuba’s Wildcats, Fatima’s Comets, Houston’s Tigers, Liberty’s (Mountain View) Eagles, Mountain Grove’s Panthers, Salem’s Tigers, St. James’ Tigers and Willow Spring’s Bears.

Before competing in districts at a site to be determined, Candrl’s Dutchmen and Dutchgirls will look to claim Four Rivers Conference (FRC) team titles on Monday, May 8 during the annual FRC track meet hosted by New Haven High School.

OHS will ultimately be looking to send as many athletes as they can to state over Memorial Day weekend at Jefferson City High School’s Dennis and Roberta Licklider Track Complex inside Adkins Stadium.
