A special meeting of the Gerald Board of Aldermen was held Tuesday, April 26.
Police Chief Jim Helton asked the boards approval to order a new Chevy Tahoe to replace a Chevy Charger currently in use. Helton cautioned the board that it could take some time for the order to be filled. The Tahoe would be purchased through Don Brown, the dealer who won the state bid to sell official vehicles.
The new vehicle would need to be equipped with a police light package. The board approved unanimously allowing Helton to spend up to $45,000 for the vehicle and package. Helton told the board he will be paying cash for the purchase using funds accumulated in his police equipment account.
After the Tahoe has been placed into service, the department will sell the Chevy Charger. Proceeds from the sale will be put back into the police equipment fund.
