SULLIVAN — Dropping a tough 55-49 contest last Monday against St. James’ Lady Tigers, Ryan Flanagan’s Owensville Dutchgirl basketball team fought their way through the consolation side of the bracket of the Peoples Bank Holiday Classic at Sullivan High School.

Handing Northwest (Cedar Hill) a 68-40 loss, OHS earned a rematch with Salem’s Lady Tigers looking to avenge a 66-57 overtime loss to their Phelps County foes from back in late November.

Trailing Salem 21-16 after one quarter Friday night, Owensville outscored the Lady Tigers 12-5 to go into halftime with a slim 28-26 lead before going on to hand Salem a 66-60 loss.

“We wanted this win so bad after they got us in overtime on our home floor,” Flanagan said. “I felt like we played good basketball throughout the week that we can use to help us throughout the season.”

Nursing a two-point halftime lead, Dutchgirl senior Breanna Diestelkamp nearly amassed a first-half triple double with 19 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Trailing the majority of the first half, Owensville never trailed in the second half holding off several Salem rallies down the stretch.

Adding to her already impressive first-half stat line, Diestelkamp finished the game against Salem with 34 points, 20 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Ella Wright and Anna Finley nearly joined her in double figures scoring eight points each.

Finley also flirted with a triple double of her own adding eight assists and five rebounds.

On the floor for 16 minutes Friday night, senior Liana Miller made the most of them adding five points and six rebounds.

“It’s great to see Liana back out there on the floor,” Flanagan said. “We’ll continue to get her back in the flow of the game as the season progresses.”

Anna Skornia added seven points and six rebounds with five of those markers coming from the free-throw line.

Kate Angell rounded out the Dutchgirl scoring against Salem with four points.

Dutchgirls vs. Northwest

Looking to tame the Lady Lions in the consolation semifinals, OHS had a 49-38 lead after three quarters before pulling away with a 19-2 run in the final eight minutes for a 68-40 victory.

Finley posted a team-high 23 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Dutchgirls.

Diestelkamp added a double double of 20 points and 12 rebounds along with five blocked shots and three steals.

Stephani Elliott netted seven points against Northwest. Skornia and Miller both added five points.

Angell dropped in a 3-ball while Destinee Busenhart and Wright kicked in two points.

Katelyn Landolt chipped in a free throw for one point.

Ending 2018 at 5-3, OHS will open 2019 at Cuba on Jan. 2.
