Continuing high prices for asphalt may affect street work again this year

Public Works Director Nick Grube addressed the Board of Aldermen at their regular meeting March 9 about upcoming street work.

Last year Grube suggested, and the board agreed, that due to sky-high asphalt prices, it would be safe to put of any new road work for one year. No streets in town were in such dire need of repaving to the high cost.

This year, according to Grube, asphalt prices have not come down much, but still asked the board to get bids on asphalt, chip and seal and concrete.

With last year’s rollover, Grube says he now has $523,000 in the transportation account for street work. If the forthcoming bids are acceptable to the city, he recommends the following work.

An asphalt overlay on Beck Road, Borror Lane, West Park Place, Devine and Field Crest drives, and Flottmann Road from Industrial Drive to the city limits.  He estimates these asphalt costs to be around $266,860 based on asphalt bids of $110 per ton.

Grube would like to chip and seal Fourth, Fifth and South streets, Terrace, Hillside, Haase and Industrial drives, Southmoor Avenue, Main Street from meadow View to the south end and from Fifth Street to Highway 50, and W. Springfield Ave. at Highway 50 to E. Springfield Ave. at Highway H.  Grube’s estimate for this work is $237,255 based on $5 per sq. yard for material.

A concrete swale at Industrial and Flottmann also needs to be replaced at a projected cost of $10,000.

This street plan has not been formally approved by the board and could change according to actual bid pricing. Grube notes the prices he used for his estimations were taken from last year’s bids.
