COVID-19 case numbers muddled; another death added this week

The death of an 86-year-old woman from Washington reported in the totals from Monday, Sept. 14, was the 25th county fatality from COVID-19.

The total number of positive COVID-19 cases in Franklin County stands at 1,379. Or perhaps 1,382. The numbers provided by the Franklin County Health Department (FCHD) do not add up, but they are pretty clear on one fact. Positive cases are climbing sharply.

In the past seven days, there have been 179 new cases reported. Or perhaps 202 new cases. Again, the count on the various reports issued by the FCHD vary widely.

Cases per location are listed in only one spot, so there is no discrepancy in that number. There were eight cases reported in the Gerald area in the past seven days and all remained active as of Monday. By comparison, there were nine active cases in the New Haven-Berger area.

The Gerald numbers include a seven-year-old girl. There are also women ages 26, 41 and 49 currently considered positive cases. Men ages 19, 26, 50 and 54 in Gerald are also considered actively fighting the virus.
