COVID-19 cases down in R-2 schools, district hopes to continue spring functions as normal

Gasconade County R-2 Superintendent Dr. Chuck Garner on Monday said a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for district staff only is in the works for March 19.

“We are working on scheduling a vaccination clinic for staff for first vaccinations,” Garner said. “The (health department) is opening tier three for the COVID-19 vaccination group on March 15.”

The clinic will be for school staff only. It will not be open to the public.

Garner sent out two surveys to district staff to find out if they were interested in receiving the vaccine if the district hosted a clinic.

“We sent out one in January and the second was sent out two weeks ago,” Garner said. “Right now, my number is 105 staff interested in receiving the vaccine.”

The district itself has been able to keep the COVID-19 positive cases down since the beginning of the year.

“In the past few weeks we have had one positive case at the Owensville Elementary School and two positive cases at the Owensville Middle School,” Garner said. “The first positive case from the middle school resulted in an extracurricular group being quarantined.”

Throughout the school district this month there have been a total of five positive cases.

“Right now our numbers are trending down,” Garner said. “When I look, we have had five positive cases in the past month. Our high for a month’s span is 18 positive cases.”

As the district moves into spring, it is making plans to continue the school year as normal as they can make it. That includes the traditional spring functions such as prom.

“Prom — the plan right now is to make plans to host one,” Garner said. “But as with everything else, the (case) numbers will dictate that. I hope we find ourselves continuing to trend in the direction we are headed.”
