COVID cases send R-2 students into quarantine

R-2 school district officials report four positive cases of coronavirus across the district with 42 students and one staff member in quarantine due to either direct exposure or exposures outside of school settings.

The four reported positive cases of COVID-19 since Oct. 28 have all been students, including one at the Owensville Elementary building, two in middle school, and one at the high school.

District officials reported on Oct. 28 there were one OES student and a middle school student who had tested positive.

The OES student was last on campus Friday, Oct. 23, and the OMS student was last on campus Tuesday, Oct. 27. None showed COVID-like symptoms while at school but they resulted in an additional 14 students being asked to quarantine, according to a text message sent by Superintendent Dr. Chuck Garner to R-2 families.

On the morning of Oct. 30, the district notified families of a high school student and seven students from OMS who had been asked by health department officials to quarantine. None had exhibited any symptoms at school but due to exposures outside the school, had been asked to go into quarantine.

Students were not in school Thursday or Friday due to mid-week parent teacher conferences and the scheduled day off Friday for faculty due to extra hours during the family meetings.

On Monday, families were notified a high school student who had last been on campus Oct. 27 had tested positive for the virus. Fifteen students were asked to quarantine due to their exposure.

In that same message, the district noted six students at Owensville Elementary School, five students at Gerald Elementary School, four students at Owensville High School, and one student and one staff member at Owensville Middle School were asked to quarantine by the health department due to exposure outside the school environment. As secondary contacts, there was no further action required.

In the notification sent out Tuesday afternoon, district officials said a middle school student last in school Oct. 28 has tested positive for COVID-19.

“The student was outside the window for contact tracing, so no further action is required,” the district told families. “In addition, two students at Owensville High School and a student at Owensville Middle School have been asked to quarantine by the health department, due to exposure outside the school environment.”

In each of the messages to families, R-2 officials noted, “No further action is required at this time, but as always it is best to monitor your child for symptoms and if they exhibit any of the COVID-19 symptoms which include cough, shortness of breath, new loss of taste or smell, fever, chills, headache, muscle ache, sore throat, congestion, nausea or diarrhea to keep your child at home, notify the school, and contact your personal health provider.”
