COLUMBIA — Seeing playing time in seven of Columbia College’s (CC) first 11 games, freshman and former Owensville Dutchgirl basketball player Emma Daniels entered CC’s final game of 2024 back on Thursday, Dec. 19 against Blackburn College looking for an early Christmas present.
Spending 23 of a possible 40 minutes on the basketball court at the Southwell Complex, Daniels ended up as one of six CC Cougar women’s basketball players scoring in double figures during their 103-33 victory over the Beavers of Blackburn College out of Carlinville, Ill.
“It has been such a fun experience so far playing my college ball here in Columbia,” Daniels said. “Today was just my day being able to play as much as I did.”
Grabbing two rebounds in the first quarter, Daniels shot her way into the scoring column on a layup at the 2:01 mark of the second quarter giving the host Cougar women a 49-6 lead over Blackburn late in the first half.
CC eventually ended the first half with a 53-6 halftime lead.
Daniels ended the first half with two points, four rebounds and two steals.
Held scoreless in the third quarter, the former Dutchgirl standout added two rebounds and an assist to her stat line.
Fourth-quarter action saw Daniels go in for a layup with 9:20 remaining giving CC a 78-21 lead.
Another Daniels layup with 5:19 remaining and a 3-pointer at the 4:25 mark of the fourth quarter bumped the Cougar lead to 96-27.
Now leading 98-29 with 2:27 left, hundreds of Columbia Public School (CPS) students began a chant of “We want 100!”.
With 2:12 remaining, Daniels made the day of those school children by hitting a 3-pointer giving her 12 points for the game while also putting CC over the century mark at 101-29.
By the time the final buzzer sounded on CC’s 103-33 victory, Daniels had posted her first career collegiate double double finishing with 12 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Other Cougars scoring in double figures along with Daniels included Lexi Miller (19), Ashtyn Klusmeyer (14), Abby Backes (11), Mallory Shetley (11) and Mara Jensen (10).
A former Tipton High School standout, Backes surpassed 1,000 career points in a CC uniform in the first half of the game.
Adding a team-high five assists to her 11 points, Shetley is a former Sullivan High School graduate.
Prior to her double double against Blackburn, Daniels also second seven points in 14 minutes during an 86-37 road American Midwest Conference (AMC) win at Hannibal-LaGrange University (HLGU) up in northeast Missouri.
She also had four rebounds and a steal against the Lady Trojans.
Entering the 2025 portion of their season undefeated at 12-0, Columbia College is scheduled to open 2025 tomorrow (Thursday) on the road in an AMC showdown with the Harris Stowe State University (HSSU) Lady Hornets at 5:30 p.m., in St. Louis.
