Diamond Dutchmen split Wednesday FRC twin bill

Dropping a 7-6 heartbreaker to Hermann in the opening game of a Four Rivers Conference (FRC) varsity baseball doubleheader at OHS Field last Wednesday night, Tyler Ahring’s Owensville Dutchmen quickly looked to bounce back in the nightcap against St. James’ Tigers.

Behind a five-run top of the third inning, OHS went on to defeat St. James 10-3 in five innings due to slick field conditions.

Due to both games against Hermann and St. James originally scheduled as road games, Owensville was the visiting team in both ends of last Wednesday’s twin bill.

Helping break the game open against St. James in the top of the third inning were Michael Steinbeck and Eoin Krupp with singles while Owensville’s other base runners in that inning reach via three of St. James’ eight errors for the game.

Scoring two runs apiece for the Dutchmen against the Tigers were Jon Saunsaucie, Logan Evans, Hunter Engelbrecht and Krupp.

Steinbeck and Gavin Loague each also scored a run for the victorious Dutchmen.

Saunsaucie pitched the first three innings against St. James to earn the win while allowing two runs on two hits to go with four walks and five strikeouts.

Garrett Crosby pitched the final two innings in relief giving up just one run on one hit to go with a walk and three strikeouts.

Against Hermann, a seventh-inning rally came up a run short when Owensville trailed the Bearcats 7-2 entering the top half of the frame.

Derek Brandt took the tough-luck loss in a game that was played primarily in light to moderate rain at OHS Field.

Dominic Grigaitis and Brandt each had a pair of hits to lead the Dutchmen offense against Hermann.

Loague also drove in a team-high two runs with one swing of the bat on a two-run home run over the left-field fence helping OHS get on the board in the top of the sixth inning.
