Diestelkamp’s DU No. 34 retired

One shining moment.

Former Owensville Dutchgirl and Drury University (DU) Lady Panther Basketball player Hailey Diestelkamp had another one of those last Tuesday night.

“Having my jersey retired felt incredible,” Diestelkamp said. “I couldn’t have accomplished any of this without my teammates, friends and family.”

During halftime of DU’s women’s  basketball game against the University of Minnesota - Duluth, Diestelkamp experienced something that only one other former OHS Dutchgirl basketball player has.

Recognized for her athletic and academic success at Westminster College (WC) in Fulton, Amy (Schaeperkoetter) Herman had her jersey retired following her induction into the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Hall of Fame back in 2007.

“Congrats Hailey on yet another wonderful honor in recognition of your amazing collegiate career at Drury,” Herman said via Facebook message. “As you get older, you will realize that one of the best parts about having your jersey hung is that you have visible proof for future generations that you were once a decent basketball player.”

Leaving DU as their all-time leading scorer and rebounder, Diestelkamp had her number 34 jersey retired alongside her Lady Panther teammate Daejah Bernard’s number five.

Racking up 2,321 points and 1,101 rebounds during her four years at Drury, Hailey was close to becoming the all-time steals leader as a Lady Panther.

Racking up 401 steals in four years, Diestelkamp finished behind former teammate Daejah Bernard (402), Molly Carter (407) and Kara Rutledge (423).

Setting DU’s single-season scoring record as a junior with 758 points, Diestelkamp also has the second-best single-season scoring mark with 692 points as a senior.

Leaving DU as the queen of the boards, HD’s 316 rebounds as a junior is the most in a season by a Lady Panther basketball player.

Diestelkamp also set the DU single-game scoring record back on Feb. 29, 2020 dropping 53 points on Rockhurst University. That is also a single-game scoring record for the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).

In addition to the 53 points against Rockhurst, Diestelkamp also set a DU single-game record in that contest with 21 field goals made.

HD also holds the DU record for most field goals made in a career with 902 along with most field goal made in a season with 300 during her junior year.
