Dutchgirl basketball makes most of seven players at St. James

In spite of only seven players in uniform for last week’s tournament-style camp at St. James, Ryan Flanagan was very pleased with the effort in his Owensville Dutchgirl varsity basketball team showed.

“The past two days, I have had seven of the nine girls I figure will be working into our varsity rotation and our results have been great,” Flanagan said.

Those results he refers to are eight wins in 10 games during the annual Licking Basketball Camp tournament last week at St. James Middle School.

Day one last Thursday saw the Dutchgirls face off against varsity squads from St. James, Lutheran (St. Charles) and Newburg.

Falling to St. James to open day one, Owensville bounced back with victories against Lutheran and Newburg.

“I am not one to openly boast about my kids, however in times like these it is nice to hear something positive,” Flanagan said. “It is completely obvious that we have something special cooking for this season.”

Friday camp tournament action saw the Dutchgirls score wins over Schuyler County, Fredericktown and Glen Carbon.

“We have been scoring 41-60 points in almost every game this summer (with a 30-minute running clock), Flanagan said. “Our defensive pressure is non-stop and we can expand a lead of six to 16 really quickly. What makes this group so special is we receive contributions from everyone and our team chemistry is so strong.”

Playing their way into the championship game Saturday, Owensville earned a rematch with St. James.

Coming up 10 points shy, Flanagan’s Dutchgirls settled for second place after taking a 52-42 loss.

Owensville’s seven players competing last week included Anna Finley, Kyla Hendrix, Keira Hendrix, Emma Daniels, Anna Skornia, Kate Angell and Leah Reed.

Finley was also named to the All-Camp Team along with Bailey Wells (St. James), Kyndal Dodd (Fredericktown), Tinley Roberts (Schuyler County), Koryn Vangilder (Lutheran - St. Charles), Claire Affolter (Newburg) and Livi Herron (St. James).

Starting tomorrow (Thursday), Owensville varsity and junior varsity Dutchgirl basketball teams will compete in another Licking team camp at St. James Middle School against teams from Salem, Linn, Vienna, Belle, Cabool, Meadville, Newburg and St. Pius.
