Dutchgirl nine walk off victorious

Being in the right place at the right time.

That was the case for Dutchgirl senior pitcher Addison Wright during Owensville softball’s home opener Thursday afternoon at OHS Field against Linn’s Lady Wildcats.

Knotted at 1-1 since the third inning, OHS had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh inning to break the tie and avoid going to extra innings.

Striking out in her two previous at bats, junior April Jahnsen singled to right field before stealing second and third base.

Down to their last out with the possibly of bonus softball looming, Wright looked to kill two birds with one stone.

Facing a 3-0 count, Wright smoked a line drive to center field easily scoring Jahnsen and giving the Dutchgirls a 2-1 walk-off victory over the visitors from Osage County.

“I’m proud of the way our girls kept battling even when things weren’t going our way,” Dutchgirl head softball coach Hannah Koppelmann said.

Pitching around a one-out single in the top of the first inning, Wright gave her Dutchgirl offense a chance to get an early lead in the bottom half of the first.

Anna Finley got the Dutchgirls going by reaching on an error with one out.

Taking second when Wright reached on another error, Finley stole third base.

Two pitches later, sophomore first baseman Kate Blankenship delivered a RBI sacrifice fly to right field allowing Finley to score putting OHS in front 1-0 after one inning.

It stayed that way until the top of the third inning.

Linn’s Delaney Schmidt drew a one-out walk before an Emma Monnette single advanced her to second base.

After Schmidt stole third, a Kylie Peters RBI ground out tied the game at 1-1.

Prior to Wright’s game-winning heroics in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Dutchgirls had two big chances to break the 1-1 tie.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Emma Daniels started a two-out rally with a triple before her cousin Alison Daniels drew a walk to put runners on the corners.

However, a ground out ended the inning keeping the game tied at 1-1.

Owensville had another golden opportunity in the bottom of the fifth.

Reaching base for the second time in the game, Finley singled to start another two-out rally. Wright followed up with another single before a Blankenship walk loaded the bases.

Another inning-ending ground out ensued keeping the game knotted at 1-1.

Working around a one-out walk and a two-out single in the top of the seventh inning, Wright set the table for her walk-off hit after pitching a scoreless top of the seventh inning.

Earning her third win of the season, Wright allowed a run on four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Duplicating their varsity counterparts, Owensville’s JV Dutchgirl softball team also scored a 9-8 walk-off victory in a three-inning game that was finished under the new set of lights that was installed over the summer.

Opening Four Rivers Conference (FRC) softball action last night (Tuesday) on the road in Union, Koppelmann’s Dutchgirls will host the defending Class 3 state champions in Sullivan’s Lady Eagles tomorrow (Thursday) at OHS Field with a 4:30 p.m., first pitch for varsity softball action.

Highway 28 bragging rights will also be up for grabs Monday in Belle against the Lady Tigers.
