Dutchgirl soccer wins season opener on own goal

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

Kalyn Kemp’s Owensville Dutchgirl soccer team found this to be true Friday afternoon during their season-opening girls soccer showdown against Fatima’s Comets on the road at Westphalia’s Knights of Columbus soccer complex.

Just over 10 minutes into the match, Owensville benefited from an own goal when Fatima kicked the ball into the back of their net at the 28:21 mark of the first half.

As the last Dutchgirl to touch the ball prior to it going in the goal, senior Drew Copeland was credited with the goal.

After that, Hannah Nelson had all the offense she needed to earn her first varsity shutout in goal.

Opening the home portion of their season Monday night against Pacific’s Lady Indians in a Four Rivers Conference (FRC) showdown, Owensville trailed 7-0 at halftime before falling 8-0 to the visitors from Pacific via the eight goal mercy rule.

After another FRC road test last night (Tuesday) in St. Clair, Kemp’s Dutchgirls (weather permitting) will have two more matches at home this week tomorrow (Thursday) night against Union’s Lady Wildcats before welcoming Fulton’s Lady Hornets Friday for a non-conference showdown starting at 5 p.m.

OHS will then hit the road on Saturday to compete in the Chris Hotop Classic at Mexico High School before facing Blair Oaks Monday on the road in Wardsville.
