Dutchgirl spikers see season end in district semifinals

Sweeping Cuba on senior night last Monday and falling to Pacific in five sets last Tuesday on their home court, Jamie Ridenhour’s Owensville Dutchgirl volleyball team looked to start the postseason on a positive note over the weekend.

Seeded third, OHS opened the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3, District 8 Volleyball Tournament at Blair Oaks High School against the second-seeded Fatima Lady Comets in the second of two semifinal matches Saturday afternoon.

Earlier in the fall, the Dutchgirls dropped their regular season match up against the Lady Comets in four sets.

Looking to avenge that loss, Owensville also looked to advance to the district championship match against the top-seeded and host Blair Oaks Lady Falcons.

Unable to sustain any momentum against the Lady Comets, Ridenhour’s Dutchgirls saw their season end in the district semifinals following a three-set loss to Fatima 25-17, 25-14 and 25-16.

Fatima fell to Blair Oaks Monday night in the championship match by scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-21.

Hosting Cuba’s Lady Wildcats last Monday for senior night, Ridenhour’s Dutchgirls defeated their Highway 19 rivals to the south in three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-22 and 25-22.

Josie Gerlemann led the Dutchgirls with 10 kills for the match followed closely with nine kills from Keira Hendrix.

Kylie Kitchen served up a team-high five aces while Gerlemann also recorded a team-high three blocks.

Olivia Vandegriffe and Kitchen tied for team-high digging honors with 13 each followed by 10 digs from Keira Hendrix.

Additional seniors honors prior to the varsity match last Monday night against Cuba included Kyla Hendrix, Kayden Wood and Anna Heidbrink.

Owensville also swept the junior varsity match against Cuba in two sets by scores of 25-7 and 25-13.

Brynn Wright served up five aces for the JV Dutchgirls in game one while Ally Gooch served six points in a row during game two helping Owensville pull away from the Lady Wildcats.

Last Tuesday in the home finale against Pacific, mixed results were had between the freshman, JV and varsity Dutchgirls.

Taylor Payne’s freshmen Dutchgirls defeated the Lady Indians in three sets 20-25, 25-12 and 25-19 while Misti Rutledge’s JV Dutchgirls fell in three sets 15-25, 25-21 and 27-25.

Ridenhour’s varsity Dutchgirls fell in five sets after taking the first two against Pacific 22-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-22 and 15-13.

Keira (19) and Kyla (12) Hendrix combined for 31 kills against Pacific.

Gerlemann and Gooch had four aces each against Pacific.

Vandegriffe recorded an eye-popping 45 digs in her final home match.
