WENTZVILLE — The sky’s the limit.

That was the saying for Owensville Dutchgirl wrestling following the completion of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 1, District 2 Girls Wrestling Tournament at North Point High School in Wentzville.

Out of six wrestlers that started the tournament, only one in freshman Bailee Dare will extend her season by two weeks during the 2022 MSHSAA Wrestling Championships held from Feb. 17-19 in Columbia at Mizzou Arena.

For the other five, their seasons ended during wrestleback action in their respective weight classes.

Ending her season at 29-12, Elizabeth Adams made it to the fourth round of wrestle backs before being pinned by Holt’s (Wentzville) Reese Compton in 3:51.

Compton went on to place third in the tournament at 115 pounds.

Adams did score pinfall victories in the consolation side of the bracket over Versailles’ Katelyn Roehrig (3:58) and Timberland’s Aubrey Kaupas (1:55).

At 141 pounds, McKenzy Echols pinned Smith-Cotton’s (Sedalia) Brooklyn Hoecker (1:37) and Boonville’s Emma Pritchett (3:18) before suffering losses by fall to Holt’s Lainey Ferrell (3:19) and Fulton’s Josie Begeman (2:05.

Ending her season at 18-24, Echols saw Ferrell go on to place second in the district at 141 pounds.

Joining Dare in advancing to day two of the tournament, Josie Gerlemann hit the mats at 149 pounds.

Pinned in 3:17 by Fort Zumwalt North’s Chloe Jones in the second round, Gerlemann had to fight her way back through the consolation side of the bracket.

Pinning Capital City’s Aarynea Meyer in six seconds and Macon’s Alexa Martinez in 1:30, Gerlemann booked passage into day two of the tournament on Sunday.

Claiming a win by fall over Francis Howell Central’s Skyler Morrisey in 2:05, Gerlemann moved one win closer to qualifying for state.

Facing St. Charles’ Elizabeth Brookesher in the fifth round of wrestle backs, Gerlemann saw her season end at 28-16 after being pinned in 1:46.

Kelby Schoenfeld competed at 174 pounds opening up round one against Washington’s Shelby Whitacre.

Pinned in 1:12, Schoenfeld drew a bye to the second round of wrestle backs.

Pinning Blair Oaks’ Nichole Burky in :36, Schoenfeld’s season came to and end at 12-20 after a losing a 12-5 decision to Maria Velasquez (Francis Howell Central).

Emily Krause saw her first season end at 13-12 following losses by fall to Battle’s Anyha Cain (:53) and Marshall’s Sherlyn Solano (4:22).

“These girls have come a long way since day one of practice three months ago,” OHS head wrestling coach Dustin Howard said. “I’m so proud of all of them and the sky is the limit for Dutchgirl wrestling.”
