Dutchgirls avenge PBHC loss to St. James

Since suffering a 55-49 setback to St. James’ Lady Tigers back in early December at the Peoples Bank Holiday Classic in Sullivan, Ryan Flanagan’s Owensville Dutchgirl basketball team have had Friday night’s date circled on the calendar.

Jumping out to a 12-5 lead after one quarter, OHS pushed their lead into double digits going into halftime by a score of 28-18.

Through three quarters, St. James cut the Dutchgirl lead to four at 38-34 before Owensville won the fourth quarter 14-10 to hold on and post a 52-44 victory over Terry Wells’ Lady Tigers Friday night.

Living right from the 3-point line in the first quarter, Owensville hit four of them including two from Anna Finley along with one each from Breanna Diestelkamp and Ella Wright.

Even though it was Ella’s only three points of the game, she still had a week that anyone else would dream of.

Winning the Gasconade County Math and Science Scholarship valued at $10,000 the previous Friday night in Hermann, Ella was crowned Homecoming Queen shortly before tip off of their game Friday night against St. James.

While they may not have come out on the winning end against Hermann, her teammates gave their all to make sure her homecoming would be that much more memorable.

Adding six points in the second quarter to her two first-quarter 3-pointers, Finley finished with 12 first-half points helping the Dutchgirls to a double-digit halftime lead.

Even though St. James won the second half 26-24, Owensville had enough of a halftime lead to hold on for the victory in front of their hometown fans.

Finley went 4-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter helping her lead the Dutchgirls and all scorers with a game-high 16 points.

Joining her in double figures with 10 points apiece were Kate Angell and Diestelkamp.

Senior Liana Miller scored seven points in her final homecoming basketball game followed closely behind with six points from Katelyn Landolt on a pair of 3-point shots in the second half.

Falling 56-47 last Tuesday night against Union during the annual Jam the Gym night, Owensville will return to action tomorrow (Thursday) night on the road at Pacific against the Lady Indians.
