Nearly out of action for a month due to COVID-19 and the holiday break, Ryan Flanagan’s Owensville Dutchgirl basketball team finally got to return to the court Thursday night.

Hitting the road to Westphalia in Osage County, OHS took on the Fatima Lady Comets.

Held to 17 first-half points, Owensville was outscored 37-29 in the second half coming up on the wrong end of a 66-46 final score on the road.

Staring at a 10-2 deficit after one quarter in Westphalia, Dutchgirl guard Anna Finley scored the lone two points for OHS denying the Lady Comets a first-quarter shutout.

 Improving on their offense with 15 second-quarter points, Owensville saw Fatima put up 19 markers leaving them trailing 29-17 at halftime.

Finley led the Dutchgirls and all scorers with nine first-half points.

Doubling their first-half point total in the third quarter, Owensville nearly saw the Lady Comets do the same adding 25 points to their first-half point total.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Dutchgirls trailed 54-34 in Westphalia.

Kate Angell drilled a pair of 3-pointers for six points to lead Owensville in the third quarter.

Playing the fourth quarter to a 12-12 tie, Flanagan’s Dutchgirls opened the 2021 portion of their season on the short end of a 66-46 final score.

Finley led all scorers with a game-high 25 points. Angell added nine points followed by five each from Emma Daniels and Kyla Hendrix.

Anna Skornia rounded out the Dutchgirl scoring with a second-quarter bucket for two points.

Angell pulled down a team-high six rebounds while Finley added five assists, five rebounds and two steals to her game-high point total.

Ellie Brune led four Fatima Lady Comets in double figures with 16 points.

Alli Robertson and Karli Struemph each chipped in 13 points while Morgan Luebbering rounded out the double-figure quartet for Fatima with 11 points.

Almost a month to the day of their last game, Terra Heidle’s Owensville junior varsity Dutchgirls took on Fatima’s JV Lady Comets looking to improve their record to 4-1 on the young season.

Trailing 27-14 at halftime, OHS was not able to get any closer before falling to the JV Lady Comets 53-33.

Ending the first quarter trailing 17-11, Owensville got eight points from Anya Binkhoelter in addition to a 3-pointer from Kate Blankenship.

Outscored 10-3 in the second quarter, the JV Dutchgirls went into half facing a double-digit deficit.

Blankenship scored a bucket in addition to an Emily Krause free throw to account for the Dutchgirl points in the second quarter.

Edged 12-10 in the third quarter, Owensville went into the fourth quarter trailing Fatima 39-24.

Grace Abell hit a 3-pointer while Kiana Guerrero scored a basket in the third quarter putting both JV Dutchgirls in the scorebook for the first time in the game.

Only able to put nine points on the board compared to 14 for Fatima in the fourth quarter, Heidle’s JV Dutchgirl saw their win streak end.

Binkhoelter led Owensville with a game-high 12 points followed by eight markers from Blankenship.

The Dutchgirls will return to action Saturday in Columbia facing Hickman at noon.
