WESTPHALIA — Seeing mixed results against a pair of green teams in their first two games of the Comet Classic last week at Fatima High School in Westphalia, Ryan Flanagan’s Owensville Dutchgirls ended up in the consolation championship game with a shot at revenge against the host Lady Comets.

Suffering a 52-30 loss on their home court against Fatima back on Thursday, Jan. 9, Owensville got the chance to return the favor last Thursday on Fatima’s home floor.

Leading 24-21 at halftime, the Dutchgirls were outscored 14-9 in the third quarter leaving them trailing 35-33 going into the final eight minutes.

Flipping the point total around in the fourth quarter, the Dutchgirls connected on five of their seven free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to deny the host Lady Comets the consolation championship by a final score of 47-44.

“This was a huge win for the girls after what happened on our court a week ago,” Flanagan said. “We needed this victory to go into our off week with confidence.”

However, the victory could be costly.

With nearly two minutes remaining, Katelyn Landolt was fouled in the act of shooting before landing on the floor and grabbing her knee in pain.

Helped off the floor, Landolt did not play the rest of the game and her condition is unknown at press time.

In spite of the injury, Finley and Kyla Hendrix hit two free throws in the closing seconds helping the Dutchgirls keep the Lady Comets at bay.

In the victory, Finley finished with a game-high 21 points followed in double figures by 11 markers from Keira Hendrix.

Of Keira’s 11 points, nine of them came from beyond the arc on 3-point shots.

Doing the majority of her damage in the second half, Kyla Hendrix scored four of her six points in the fourth quarter.

Kate Angell followed with four points in addition to three first-half points from Anna Skornia and a pair of second-quarter free throws for two points from Leah Reed.

Karli Struemph led Fatima with a team-high 13 points for the Lady Comets. Lauren Brandt and Taylor Bexten just missed making it a trio of Lady Comets scoring in double figures finishing with nine points each.

In the consolation semifinals last Wednesday, Owensville took on an opponent that fans may only remember facing on the football field back in the late 1960s and early 1970s in Iberia’s Lady Rangers.

Jumping out to a 34-13 halftime lead, the Dutchgirls cruised to a 67-29 victory over the Lady Rangers.

Outscoring Iberia by herself in the first half, Finley scored 16 of her game-high 22 points before halftime.

Angell and Keira Hendrix also reached double figures putting 11 points each on the board.

Landolt added eight points along with seven from Reed against Iberia.

Falling 47-36 to Blair Oaks in the first round, Finley led OHS with 10 points before fouling out.

Idle this week, the Dutchgirls return to action next week at the Hermann Tournament.
