Defending the home court.

That was the goal Monday night for Ryan Flanagan’s Owensville Dutchgirls in the opening round of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 4, District 9 Girls Basketball Tournament.

Hosting Salem’s Lady Tigers, OHS was looking for their second win over their Dent County foes this year.

Posting a 69-32 victory over Salem back in mid-January, the Dutchgirls had a full squad at their disposal.

For this go-round, OHS was without Kyla Hendrix injured in a car accident and Anna Finley who sustained an ankle injury against Sullivan last Tuesday night.

Down as much as 14 in the first quarter, Owensville was able to cut the lead to three at 26-23 before going into halftime trailing 28-23.

Outscored 34-20 in the second half, the Dutchgirls saw their season end at 12-10 following a 62-43 loss to the Lady Tigers.

Salem advances to the district semifinals tonight (Wednesday) against the top-seeded Fatima Lady Comets at 6 p.m., at Fatima High School in Westphalia.

Surrendering the first seven points of the game, Owensville finally got on the board at the 5:21 mark of the first quarter on a pair of Emma Daniels free throws.

Trailing 16-2 at the 3:07 mark of the quarter, an Addison Wright free throw started a 7-2 run cutting Salem’s lead to 18-9 after one quarter.

Daniels accounted for six of OHS’ first-quarter points followed by two from Katelyn Landolt and one from Wright.

Opening the second quarter on a 6-0 run, the Dutchgirls got a 3-pointer from Kate Angell, a free throw from Landry Watson and a Keira Hendrix bucket cut the Lady Tiger lead to 18-15 with 5:50 left until halftime.

Outscored 10-8 the rest of the quarter, Owensville went into halftime trailing 28-23.

Daniels led the Dutchgirls with eight first-half points followed by four from Hendrix.

Bella Jadwin led Salem with seven first-half points.

Seeing the Lady Tigers open the second half on an 11-2 run, the Dutchgirls suddenly found themselves trailing 39-25 at the 4:46 mark of the third quarter.

Owensville entered the fourth quarter trailing Salem 51-33 behind five points from Daniels, two points from Landolt and a free throw from freshman Audrey Quilacio.

Starting the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run, the Dutchgirls trimmed the Lady Tiger lead to 54-43 with 3:02 remaining.

Unable to score the rest of the game, Owensville saw Salem go on an 8-0 run during the final 2:20.

She also added six steals and four rebounds to her game-high point total.
