Dutchgirls sweep Lady Cavaliers

Dropping 71 points on Borgia’s Lady Knights in their season opener the night before, Ryan Flanagan’s Owensville Dutchgirls looked for their second win in as many games last Tuesday during their home opener against Capital City’s Lady Cavaliers.

Scoring the first 14 points of the game, Owensville’s defensive pressure led to 39 Capital City turnovers before the Dutchgirls put up 71 points for the second time in as many nights.

“It took a little bit for our offense to get going tonight,” Flanagan said. “However, I was very pleased with our defense in that we were able to turn that into instant offense throughout the night.”

Scoreless until the 5:45 mark of the first quarter, a pair of Anna Finley free throws sparked a 14-0 run by the Dutchgirls.

Additional points from Landry Watson, Kyla Hendrix, Anna Skornia and Finley helped Owensville to a 26-10 lead after one quarter over Capital City.

Holding the Lady Cavaliers to five points in the second quarter, Flanagan’s Dutchgirls added 14 to their point total giving them a 40-15 halftime lead.

Finley paced Owensville in the first half with 10 points.

Keeping their feet on the gas in the third quarter, OHS scorched the nets for 23 third-quarter points while holding Capital City to six markers.

Taking a 63-21 lead into the fourth quarter, Finley more than doubled her first-half point total with 14 third-quarter points. Also scoring to start the second half for the Dutchgirls was Kyla Hendrix with five points, Kate Angell with three points and Keira Hendrix with a free throw for one point.

Finishing the game with eight fourth-quarter points, Keira Hendrix splashed home a pair of 3-pointers in the final 1:11 helping the Dutchgirls amass 71 points for the second straight game.

Showing the way for Owensville, Finley posted an impressive stat line of 24 points, 12 rebounds, seven steals and six assists.

Keira Hendrix also reached double figures with 12 points while adding six steals and five rebounds.

Kyla Hendrix made it three Dutchgirls in double figures with 11 points.

Freshman Emma Daniels added seven points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Angell and Skornia each chipped in six points while Skornia pulled down nine rebounds.

Landry Watson chipped in three points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds while Addison Wright had a second-quarter bucket for two points.

Prior to varsity action, Terra Heidle’s JV Dutchgirls posted a 20-17 victory over Capital City in a two-quarter contest.

Kate Blankenship led OHS in the JV game with six points.

Grace Abell added four points while Audrey Quilacio chipped in four points. Kiana Guerrero and Anya Binkhoelter each had two points.

Abell and Guerrero both recorded a team-high three steals while McKenzy Echols dished out a team-high three assists.

Ella Gehlert, Quilacio and Guerrero each grabbed three rebounds.
